Khapli wheat is a type of wheat that has been genetically modified. Khapli is an acronym for Kalyan Agriculture Produce Logistics Infrastructure, which also works to increase the required production capacity of the Kalyan-Dombivli belt in Maharashtra. Khapli wheat was first developed as a collaborative effort between the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, and Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company (Mahyco).
Khapli wheat was developed to increase the yield per hectare without adding humidity, disease, or pest problems. Khapli wheat can produce up to 60 percent higher results than standard wheat and takes less time to grow. Khapl plants are shorter than typical plants, and Khapli wheat also has a shorter growing season. Khapli can be grown in different soil conditions, which allows Khapli farmers to use the same land every year for Khapli cultivation. Kalyan-Dombivli belt is one of the most fertile regions in India where Khapli wheat grows well.
Traditional crops like jowar, cotton, and rice take their toll on soil fertility, so Kalyan-Dombivli belt farmers usually use chemicals to rejuvenate the soil by alternating between these crops every year or two years. Khapli helps these farmers rotate their crops properly without increasing prices or reducing crop output by using Khapli and improving the overall yield and production of the Kalyan-Dombivli belt. Khapli wheat also helps make Kalyan-Dombivli belt a more sustainable region for farming.
By reducing the number of chemicals used to rejuvenate the soil, Khapli wheat reduces agricultural pollution and increases yields without fussing with existing fertility levels in Kalyan-Dombivli. Since Khapli is resistant to cold weather, it can be grown in Kalyan-Dombivli during winter, when other crops wither in cold weather or require expensive insulation from freezing temperatures.
As well as increasing crop output per acre, the shorter growing period of Khapli in Kalyan-Dombivli allows farmers to double their Khapli production, and the Kalyan-Dombivli belt can become a significant source for Khapli wheat in India. Khapli has been trialed successfully in the Wafd region of Egypt, where Khapli was found to thrive well even when other crops like maize failed.
Khapli also works well with typical crops, so Kalyan -Dombival farmers still plant regular wheat alongside Khapli wheat. Mixing crops is difficult but Khapli, shorter than specific plants, intermingles well with existing vegetation without causing compatibility problems. Maintaining good soil fertility levels is essential to Khapli cultivation as Kalyan-Dombivli is already a highly fertile belt. Khapli wheat also has lower levels of mycotoxin content than standard wheat, which is economical and keeps Khapli cultivation free from adverse environmental conditions.
Khapli seeds are registered with the Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company (Mahyco). The seed packets have the registration number mentioned on their label so Kalyan -Dombivli farmers can be confident about it getting true Khapli seeds for their farms. All Mahyco seeds are cross-bred using genetic material like pollen or eggs from two different plants that combine the best properties of each into one plant.
This means Khapli is the result of two other plants rather than just one Kalyan-Dombivli Khapli wheat is, therefore, more advanced than normal Kalyan-Dombivali Kalyan -Dombivli Kalyan-Dombivli It is essential to register your Khapli seed packets with Mahyco so you can be assured of getting high-quality Khapli seeds every time.
